A lipoma may grow back if it was incompletely removed. Assuming what was left was a small piece, it may take months to a year before it is big enough to feel and see. It is usually possible to completely remove a lipoma and see that it has been fully removed by observing the capsule is intact, particularly the bottom of the lipoma. Your doctor evidently did not remove all of it. I'm very sorry to hear that. Sometimes pretty rarely, do lipomas come back after excision and removal (5-7%of the time). A lot of the time they can be removed with an in office procedure. Great question! First off, I think it's important to differentiate a lipoma (benign fatty growth) from anything more concerning. This can often be done clinically based on how long the spot has been present and if there are any other concerning symptoms like pain, rapid growth, drainage, etc....

It is hard to tell based on the photo whether the swelling is from 1) normal edema/swelling after surgery 2) scar tissue deposition 3) recurrence of your lipoma. In office steroid injections can help with 1 & 2 and only time will tell if it could be number 3. I would certainly discuss with your...
