Hello! My doctor is located in Texas and he does not use drains. He is one of two doctors I've heard not recommend post op massages. Is this true or advisable? I heard massages are crucial to molding your body and avoiding lumps. Are they truly that optional without drains or will not getting them decrease my results? Thank you in advance.
Answer: My doctor does not recommend massages after a BBL? Lymphatic massages may be of benefit, but your massages should be carefully orchestrated with your plastic surgeon. I have only seen complications like hematoma and seroma due to increased pressure from the massage. I do not recommend lymphatic massage for my patients, because I feel as though if the result is smooth on the table, the result can only be sabotaged.

Answer: Massage Therapy after BBL Thank you for your question. As stated in other answers, each surgeon has their own technique and protocols. I have every single one of my patients visit our in-house peri-operative massage therapist after surgery. Check out the video below for some insight. Good luck!

Answer: My doctor does not recommend massages after a BBL? Hello dear!! Thanks for the question and provided information as well. Each doctor has their own protocol. It is very important that you talk to him and follow his instructions. I suggest my patients get at least 10 sessions of lymphatic massages and to use a full body compression garment, 24/7 for the first 3 months, and after that, for 12 hours a day for 3 more months, to get the best results. It is important for the compression garment to be very tight, for it to help with the swelling, after surgery. If you have any concerns, please follow up close with your plastic surgeon. Good luck :)

Answer: Massage is not needed after BBL I am the only board-certified plastic surgeon in the western United States whose practice is exclusively devoted to liposuction and fat transfer procedures. I’ve performed over 7000 Liposuction procedures to date and I have never asked my patients to get massage or put in a drain. There is zero scientific literature supporting the use of massage as having a positive benefit in regards to liposuction. Almost all the advocates of massage have a secondary gain by either employing massage therapists and selling the massage out of their practice or some type of financial arrangement. You cannot alter the outcome of the procedure through physical manipulation. You simply cannot change your own fat distribution. Massage after liposuction is painful. Pain is your body’s signal that is being damaged or injured. Inducing painful stimulus during healing causes more inflammation with further swelling and delayed healing. If massage was helpful someone would’ve proved it by now. None of my plastic surgery colleagues who are on top of the game in body contouring recommend massage. It seems to be a geographic thing. Latin countries seem to be big on this. My patients end up with great consistent results that are all soft with no lumps. Those outcomes come from badly done Liposuction. There is no other explanation. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
