Sinus infection and allergy diagnosis 1 day prior to breast augmentation, how long do i have to wait to get the surgery now?

I have been coughing for 1 month, I took mucinex dm and cipro last week.Its only a cough, no chest congestion or fevers.Twice when I coughed a lot I vomitted or leak a little urine/discharge.Last night I developed runny nose and sneezing.Went to my internist today and he said I have sinus infection and allergies. He prescribed flonase, loratadine and steroids.I had my breast aug scheduled for tomorrow but decided to postpone it.If I take the steroids for 5 days can I have boob job the day after?

I would recommend waiting until your symtoms have completely cleared and you are off all medications before proceeding with surgery. Your immune system is compromised, and you are at higher risk for infection, such as pneumonia. The risk of having an infection around an implant is increased as well, which would require removal.

Breast Augmentation surgery should be done when a patient is healthy and free of any symptoms of infection especially when placing a implant of any kind in the body.  Follow up with your doctor that prescribed your medications for clearance as to when it would be best to reschedule your elective surgery.

You sound as though you have had a terrible cold. Once your infections resolve,  I would suggest waiting at least 1 month before elective surgery on the breasts.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question and I am sorry to hear of your sinus infection.  Ultimately the best timing will be when you are completely clear of your infection which may be 1-3 weeks.  Because the implants are permanent devices there is no reason to risk infection by rescheduling prematurely.  Hope this helps.

Breast augmentation with implants should be performed electively when a patient is completely healthy.If a patient has an infection going on and breast augmentation with implants is performed, there is a high risk that the implants could get infected with the patients own blood (eg. sinus infection could cause sinus bacteria to go to the blood stream and cause infection of breast implants).Patients scheduled for breast augmentation with implants and acute infection should ask their surgeon for how long the surgery shall be postponed.

You need to be cleared of your infection before having elective surgery. Please discuss this with your surgeon and medical doctor. You do not want the infection to become worse due to surgery, nor risk  infecting your implants.
