Will nerve damage pain from breast explant on back of arm and armpit go away?

I had breast implant removal and lift two weeks ago. On my right side I believe I have nerve damage. I have severe burning, pain and sensitivity in my right armpit and down the back of my right arm all the way to the elbow. My range of motion on that side is also not great. Left side feels perfectly normal. Is this likely to go away?

Nerve pain to the extent that you describe will likely improve as you continue to heal from surgery.  If it persists or does not improve, speak with your surgeon about options including medication or physical therapy to help.

The type of pain you describe is typical of sensory nerve damage and is not uncommon after surgery. NSAID medications are generally helpful in most cases but you should check with your surgeon to be sure he/ she approves. Nerves can be slow to heal but with proper management you should have less discomfort.

Dear oanawatson,When breast implants are removed the scar tissue capsule is typically removed as well, which is called a capsulectomy. Nerves can definitely be cut, damaged, stretched, or irritated during many surgical procedures, and implant removal with capsulectomy is no exception. Nerve pain can be very intense, and there are medications orally or topically that can help treat the symptoms until it resolves. I would recommend that you see your surgeon for an exam and if you feel you need additional medication to help with the pain you can discuss this with them at the visit. I would guess you would continue to improve gradually regardless of whether you use medication or just the tincture of time.Best of luck,
