5 weeks ago I had 75 units injected in forehead..50 the first week and 25 the following week. I had an "active forehead" and was an out of town patient. Immediately following the procedure I experienced muscle spasms that disappears over he next day or so. Yesterday they returned. My question is this .. Is the Botox wearing off? Is the muscle finally giving up ? Is this normal? Thank you
Answer: Botox and Spasms The dosing for Botox is variable and based on the desired effect, the amount of current animation, and the strength of the muscles. For new patients, however, the exact dosing is often discovered through a trial and error process. See link below. Some rough guidelines are:Forehead: 16 unitsCrowfeet: 8 units per sideGlabella: 18 units75 units is a healthy dose of Botox for the forehead. There should be no movement - let alone spasms. Consultation with a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery would be the next best step.

Answer: Muscle Spasms on Forehead After Botox Botox treats muscles spasms doesn't cause them. What I see in the pictures is dynamic wrinkles or movement lines meaning the toxin is wearing off. Although, 75 units in the forehead is a WAY too large of a dose. Are you sure you didnt have Dysport injected? I suggest speaking to your physician or finding someone who is more of an expert at toxin injections for you next treatment/evaluation. Best, Dr. Emer.

Answer: Botox wearing off It looks like you can see wrinkles when you try to lift your eyebrows ... these are called Dynamic wrinkles. When you are not trying to raise your eyebrows, you're forehead looks quite smooth. You do not have any Static wrinkles, that is, wrinkles present at rest. In general, when we treat forehead wrinkles, we are treating Static wrinkles. Overall it appears that the Botox is still doing what it should. Once you see wrinkles at rest, then you will know you need another treatment.

Answer: 75 units of Botox on forehead There are a couple of unusual aspects of your experience. First, 75 units of Botox is ALOT to treat the glabella and forehead. If you had Dysport treatment, instead of Botox, then 75 units is reasonable for those two areas. I suspect you were treated with Dysport but I am curious to know. Second, the muscle spasms are unusual. Personally, when I first started using Botox I had one treatment where I developed an annoying tic around my left eye as the Botox wore off. This has never occurred again. If you are not having any other neurological concerns then this should not be an issue. If you're having other symptoms let your injector know and followup with them and your internist. If you live in Denver, there's definitely no reason to need to leave town for Botox. There are many expert physician injectors in town.Stephen Weber MD, FACSDenver Facial Plastic Surgeon
