Yes, this hollow area (often called the tear trough or infraorbital hollow) can typically be treated with filler. The most commonly used fillers in this area are hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers, such as Restylane or certain Juvederm products. These fillers are specifically used to restore volume under the eyes and can significantly improve the appearance of hollowness when placed correctly. Hyaluronic acid fillers are FDA-approved for facial volume restoration and are temporary, usually lasting about 6–12 months. One advantage of HA fillers is that they are reversible with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed, which adds an extra layer of safety. For the under-eye area, the filler is typically placed deep along the bone (supraperiosteal plane) using either a needle or a blunt cannula. Proper technique is extremely important in this delicate area to reduce the risk of swelling, lumps, or a bluish discoloration known as the Tyndall effect. That said, not every hollow under the eye is best treated with filler. If there is significant fat bulging, loose skin, or very thin skin, surgery or other treatments may be more appropriate. An in-person evaluation is important to determine candidacy.
