I Am 5 Days Post Op for my Rhinoplasty and I Feel Like I'm Drowning?

Question

I am 5 days post op for my rhinoplasty. My right side is still bleeding - not profously, but a small steady stream.....like a constant drip. My concern is the amounts of fluids in the back of my throat. It is difficult to talk and/or swallow due this fluid in the back of my throat. I already have anxiety issues and have had trouble swallowing in general even prior to this surgery, so I'm not sure if this is just a normal recovery. Please help ease my mind.

Dear Pokerldy,

	thank you for your question.  By 5 days, bleeding should have stopped. You may have some nasal drainage that is somewhat bloody looking due to any old blood that is in your nose.  But if still bleeding, decrease your activity level, sit down and relax.  Be assessed by your surgeon if it does not stop.

You should see your surgeon if you have persistent bleeding. You may have blood tinged secretions which are normal until internal nasal splints are removed. The secretions decrease with splint removal and allow you to rinse better with saline nasal spray. Donald R. Nunn MD Atlanta Plastic Surgeon
