Subcutaneous emphysema post BA?

Question

I am 3 days post op from breast augmentation placed over the muscle, but under the fascia. My upper chest is pretty swollen and when I press on my skin, I hear and feel a crackling sound? I googled it, and think I may have subcutaneous emphysema. Is this normal or dangerous? My entire torso is pretty swollen. Is there anything I can do to help release this air?

Thank you for sharing your question.  Subcutaneous emphysema can occur following a breast augmentation and leads to the feeling of small crackles when the skin is pressed.  Not dangerous to patients this will resolve spontaneously given enough time for your results to mature.  Hang in there!

As mentioned, surely consult your plastic surgeon for an examination and advice.  Without any other symptoms, such as shortness of breath, etc., you are correct in that this probably is air in the soft tissue layer, giving it this feeling.  It should dissipate in several days to a couple weeks at most and the cause is the creation of air extending to this layer during the pocket formation and placement of the implant.  Your plastic surgeon is your best resource.Cheers,Brad Remington, MD

Sometimes after an augmentation, there will be some air trapped underneath the skin.  This can give the sensation/sound of what you are describing.  There is no cause for concern as the emphysema will resolve over the next several days.  If concerned, make sure to address this issue with your surgeon during your follow-up visits.
