Will IPL for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation work after peeling with phenol? (photo)

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a very difficult problem and is best avoided if at all possible. Once PIH occurs, it can be quite difficult to treat. Generally, taking a step back from all treatments other than topical skin care is the best approach because many skin treatment procedures (lasers, IPL, peels, etc) do have the risk of worsening the hyperpigmentation. Be sure to see an expert who specializes in facial aesthetic procedures.All the best,

I agree with dr. Posner. Topical therapy with bleaching creams and mild exfoliants will usually improve post inflammatory pigmentation. Before considering IPL or lasers you must pretreat with bleaching creams to prevent PIH from reoccurring.Good luck!Jeff Rapaport MD FAADRealself All-star

I would start with skincare will help with PIH in most cases. Triluma Cream which including a hydroquinone, retinoid, and a light steroid should do the trick when combined with good sun protection  and antioxidants. 

We see PIH after lasers and deeper peels on a pretty regular basis. First line of treatment is always skin care. It solves the problems most of the time. IPL and other lasers are reserved for recalcitrant cases

Doing a peel with skin inflammed could cause inflametion a serious problems. first try to get your skin on shape 2 or 5 months after the even a peeling would be an option

Darkness and PIH are often associated with phenol peels. However, this can resolve on it's own (with daily sunscreen use of course) AND can be resolved quicker by using a topical Rx like hydroquinone. I wouldn't treat the PIH with IPL. I'd get your PIH resolved with skincare first. And then in maybe 3-6 months I'd address your sunspots with IPL.
