Answer: Volume of fat removed There is no specific volume limit other than the surgeons best judgment. I believe Florida has set legal limits on how much fat can be removed during outpatient surgeries. In California there are no legal parameters but there are safety guidelines that were said by committees determining best practice limiting fat removal to 5 L of fat for outpatient procedures. More fat can be removed if the patient is observed during the recovery phase. I'm quite certain most plastic surgeons have removed more than 1 L of fat during certain abdominoplasty procedures. The limitation of how much fat is removed during an abdominoplasty it's more limited to safety concerns in regards to blood flow which can lead to higher incidence of complications with tissue necrosis. Most plastic surgeons will limit how much fat is removed with liposuction when done in conjunction with an abdominoplasty. This is for the purpose of minimizing the chance of having a complication. I perform the great majority of liposuction and fat transfer procedures such as Brazilians with my patient is awake using local Anastasia and mild sedation. My preference is to have this done with aggressive liposuction minimizing the chance of complications prior to the abdominal plasty. At the time of the abdominal plasty all excessive amounts of fat have been removed and the patient is now an ideal candidate for the very best outcome. When separating the two procedures a minimum of six months should be given between the liposuction and abdominal plasty. Plastic surgeons will vary on the amount of time but having the abdominal plasty done too soon would limit the potential of the abdominal plastybecause scar tissue from the liposuction has not yet matured. Early scar tissue has limited elasticity and will not allow for enough skin to be removed for the best results. Talk to a local board-certified plastic surgeon with expertise in both procedures and they can explain the whole process in more detail. Medical tourism without in person consultation's unfortunately are often in adequate and explaining details or answering questions such as your own. This can lead to misunderstandings and patience relying on forms such as real self to try to get an understanding of how the procedure or postoperative care works. Best, Mats Hagstrom M.D.
