HSA acceptance for plastic surgery?

I have lost 95 pounds. I started saving for a breast lift and implants at 50 pounds down. I have 7k in a HSA account. I’m devastated as I heard that this can’t be used for plastic surgery. Is this true? Is there a WAy to get at least part of it covered with the money I have saved in my HSA? Thank you

Congratulations on your weight loss!  Typically cosmetic procedures are excluded from eligibility for HSA funds.  As you have lost significant weight there may be an exception.  Check with your provider to determine what is eligible for coverage.

You can’t use your HSA  for cosmetic surgery but it sounds like yours is more reconstructive than  cosmetic. I have had patients use their HSA for things like this and it has not been questioned

HSA spending is going to be limited for medically indicated procedures.
This is most likely not going to include procedures that are considered cosmetic.
Typically breast augmentation and breast lift surgery are not considered medically indicated and cosmetic.
Breast reduction on the other hand would be considered a medically indicated procedure.
 You may want to talk to your plastic surgeon if you have one to see if they can come up with an ethical way of getting the procedure documented as medically indicated.
