Hello, it is not normal to fill the implants with a greater volume than their capacity, because they can break more easily, or the solution can begin to leak, this is not normal, it should not be done, but it is something common that some doctors do, I I don't recommend doing that
Some surgeons will overfill implants to achieve the desired volume and shape. The negatives to doing this is that they can feel abnormally firm, and it may invalidate your warranty.
There is a recommended fill range for saline implants (approximately 20-50 ml). It is generally advisable that saline devices not be underfilled and preferably filled to the maximum to mitigate the risk of rippling which can over time compromise the device integrity. That being said, overfilling to the degree stated above (170 ml) is unusual. While the devices are durable and modest overfilling does appear to increase device longevity, there is no reason to overfill to this extent when a larger implant can be used. Additionally, beyond device lifespan, the device will begin to distort and quoted dimensions become less reliable with aggressive overfill. As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).
Thank you for your question. Saline implant overfilling can be done, but the degree of overfilling should be according to the manufacturer's recommendation. Manufacturers usually recommend a range of overfilling 10-15% of the implant's original size. This can prevent premature rupture, reduce the risk of rippling, and maintain the implant shape. For a 330cc implant, the safe range is around 360-380cc, and filling to 500cc would exceed the recommended manufacturer's range, increasing the risk of implant rupture, excessive firmness, or wrinkling. If you aim for more volume, choosing an implant with a higher base size might be safer than overfilling beyond recommended limits.
Hello and thank you for your question! Saline implants come as empty silicone shells with a valve that can be filled with salt water (saline) during surgery. The silicone shells come with a "recommended fill volume" from the manufacturer that can vary slightly from company to company but is usually about the stated volume to about 10% more of that listed volume. For example, a 330cc moderate profile saline implant from Allergan has a current listed recommended fill volume from anywhere between 330cc-360cc. This is commonly done on purpose to help address some minor asymmetries between the breasts. Slightly altering the fill volume within a given implant size also changes some minor characteristics of the implant besides volume, including diameter, projection, etc. It is possible to overfill an implant further past the recommended limits, but the manufacturer doesn't recommend this and can likely void the warranty. Typically the surgeon would "choose the next size up" if they needed more volume. In your case, I would double check with your surgeon as this represents overfilling an implant by 170cc or over 50% and there are no published cases to my knowledge of performing this.
Surgeons overfill saline implants commonly. I’m Not sure why a surgeon would overfill them that much however
Hello,Thank you for the question. Implant size discussion and implant selection is one of the most important steps during your consultation with plastic surgeon. The decision-making process depends on patient’s desires, as well as breast and soft tissue dimensions of the chest wall. Overfilling saline implants is common but typically it's recommended to overfill by 10% max, which may translate to 30-50cc. I hope this helps.Best,Dr. Karanetz Dr. Irena KaranetzBreast Fellowship-TrainedBoard Certified Plastic SurgeonQueens, New York(516) 833 0309
Saline implants are typically filled any where from 30 - 50 cc above their stated size. In your case, they are filled 170 cc above their size. This not only increases the firmness of your breasts, but will void your implants’ warranty. Hopes this helps.
The implants can be overfilled and some overfilling is good. However, for that size, 150 cc's does exceed the recommended amount. This much overfill will make your implant more like a firmer ball. Perhaps your surgeon did not have a larger implant but decided you needed 500 cc's.
Saline implants come with a "fill range" that is recommended by the manufacturer. By filling to the upper end of the range some of the characteristics of the implant may be better disguised. However it would not be common to fill a 330cc implant to 500cc as the fill range for a 330cc implant would not go that high. Typically a surgeon would select a larger implant with a fill range closer to the 500cc if that was the desired end volume.

After I measure and discuss goals with my patients, we then look at pictures of women (my patients) with similar measurements with different size and style breast implants. They also get to see what they would look like when the breasts have fully dropped and fluffed and in clothes. You get to...
