Is severe upper lip swelling after lip fillers normal? (photos)

Yes, this can be typical. I would wait a full 2 weeks before judging the results. If it is after the two week wait, you can have the filler reversed with hyaluronidase.

Hello Diann.Swelling with lip injections is pretty common. In your photo, yes you look swollen, but I don't see anything out of the ordinary. Dear diannmperez,Thank you for your question. Swelling after filler can occur, and often times can last for about two weeks post injection. Try sleeping with your head slightly elevated and also ice the area to help with the swelling. Taking an anti inflammatory can also help. If the swelling lasts longer than two weeks, contact your injector and request to be seen in person in order to be properly examined. 

This swelling doesnt look abnormal at all, this can happen. If after 2 weeks you still have issues, reverse the fillers.  Claritin, antiinflammatories, ice, and arnika can all help at this time. Best, Dr. Emer.

Dear diannmperez,dermal fillers have significant swelling post injection. I would follow up with you plastic surgeon but typically I tell all my patients to wait a full two weeks.  Generally at 2 weeks they are happy and glad they didn't dissolve.  Dissolving is unpredictable as well.Daniel Barrett, MD, MHA, MS

Thank you for your question. It is common to have some swelling after fillers for lip augmentation and can take up 2 weeks to fully resolve and see your final results. You can ice the area to help reduce any swelling. Also, it is advisable to avoid any NSAID’s before and after treatment to help reduce the risk of swelling and bruising. Dear diannmperez:This is a side effect for some fillers used in the lips, but not a requirement for adequate treatment. Using fillers that don’t swell as much, such as Belotero, can prevent this.All the best,   Dr. Clark

Happy New Year. Lips can swell, sometimes, severely, after filler injections and they should normalize within 1-2 weeks, though often swelling reduces a lot after the first 2-3 days. I would see your injecting physician for evaluation and reassurance. Arnica may help with swelling and in certain patient cases, I do prescribe a short course of prednisone tablets to diminish swelling quickly. 

It can occur but is not the norm. I don't see any bruise so it is probably not that. The symmetry of the upper lip is excellent so I bet you will be happy in a week when the swelling goes down. If one syringe or less was used then it is not a result of too much product either. I think you will be just fine. Can use some cold applications and perhaps sleep with your head higher than the rest of your body to promote drainage.

It is very common to have swelling after fillers and the upper lip usually swells much more than the lower. Some fillers swell more than others. Restylane Silk seems to swell the most while  Restylane Refyne  and Restylane L swell much less. The swelling usually goes down within a day or two and certainly should be back to where it will stay within a week as long as none of it is caused by bruising and in that case I would give it two weeks. So, be patient because you might love your lips in a few days
