While there is no consistent answer to this question, I generally tell my patients that after your wounds are "water-tight", meaning that there are no separations or ulcerations in the skin, no drain sites openings, and the wounds are stable and dry, then it is safe to be in the water. While I allow my patients to shower as early as 1-2 days after surgery, it is a different answer when it comes to pools or beach swimming. Lastly, hot tubs can potentially dangerous on skin that is numb to sensation, and I have seen some 2nd degree burns on patients who were not careful with heat. So barring any complications with surgery, it is always prudent to be cautious for the 1st 3 months after surgery.
