Tingling, numbness, and pain 8 months after ablation, sclerotherapy, and vein stripping. I need opinions.

On your description you do not specify what vein was treated and what part of the leg hurt, numbness, etc. I'm assuming that you have one of the great saphenous veins treated and that the symptoms are in the thigh and the lower part of the leg below the knee. There is a nerve called saphenous nerve that runs very close to the saphenous vein in the lower third of the thigh. Occasionally this nerve gets damaged during these veins procedures. Although it can be uncomfortable, the symptoms usually resolve in 6-12 months. You could consult a neurologist and determine if any of the medications used commonly for neuropathic pain might help you. But be patient, the pain will not last forever. :)

You seem to be describing symptoms related to a nerve irritation.  It would be beneficial to know exactly what area of the leg is involved so that this could better localize the nerve involve.  Wet heat to the area and ibuprofen may help as well as a medrol dose pack.  Follow up with your treating physician.  Most of these nerve issues are self limiting but may take a year or more to resolve.

It sounds like you had a nerve injured during your vein treatments.  It is more common with vein stripping, than ablation or sclerotherapy.  Most often it is not permanent, but can take up to a year to resolve.I would first talk to your surgeon, if you have not done so already.  I often will use neurotin or Lyrica, as well as short term steroids for this type of pain.Good luck to you,Dr. Powell
