Matting can be a reaction to the procedures described, often related to an inflammatory response.  Often it will fade by 6 months.  Since you are 5 months out, it may not go away on its own.  For those patients I usually do some additional sclerotherapy ( possibly with a different agent ) or laser therapy to try to clear it up.  It may take 2-3 sessions to get full results.

5 months ago I had sclerotherapy on my thighs, which left huge red matted areas. Two months ago I had it done below the knee, which also caused matting. My legs look so much worse than before. I went back to get another ultrasound to check for reflux but everything was ok. I already had Evlt of large and small saphenous veins both legs and ultrasound guided sclero done last year. How should I approach treating this? Scared to make it even worse while spending more money... thanks!

Hello, It is appropriate that your doctor chose a different treatment method for a vein close to the skin.  UGFS does have less success.  There is a product called Varithena, however, that pushes a 94% closure rate.  The other alternative is to use Venaseal, a super glue for the leg, that does not require heat, or a truncal ligation and phlebectomy.  I prefer Venaseal or UGFS since there are less invavsive.  Changing treatments based on the vein is appropriate, and shows a doctor knowledgeable in vein care.  A "one treatment fits all" does not work, and I have taken care of many unhappy patients who had this kind of care.Good luck,Dr. Powell

I had a procedure to close saphenous veins on both legs. 2 wks ago the doctor performed Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) on left leg. However, today, he decided to do Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS) on the right leg. His reasoning was that the saphenous vein on my right leg was too close to the skin. If he does EVLT it will leave a track on my skin. Does it make sense that the doctor did a different procedure on each leg? I am pretty upset by this due to poor success rate for UGFS.

Swelling after any type of surgery or procedures is normal.  Sclerotherapy causes an inflammatory response, which results in swelling.  Some people swell more than others.  As the body heals, this should resolve.  Leg elevation, compression socks, NSAIDs will help with this, but mostly it takes time.  This can range from a few days to several weeks.  If you have a lot of discomfort, or if the swelling does not go down with leg elevation, see your doctor to make sure there are no complications.Good luck to you,Dr Powell

Why does my calf swell 3/4 inch more after treatment of veins with ultrasound guided Sclerotherapy?

This appears to be a reticular vein, which I like to treat with sclerotherapy.  Microphlebectomy is also an option, but can be tricky on the shin since the skin is thin and often very fibrous in this area.See an expert in Phlebology.  It may require more than one session to get complete results, but someone experienced should be able to help you get rid of this vein.Good luck,Dr. Powell

Hi there. I have a single prominent vein down my shin - super ugly and especially noticeable as I’m pale skinned. I’ve tried covering with fake tan but it’s still super noticeable. What treatment could I have to remove please?

I usually prefer sclerotherapy as my first line of therapy, but for very tiny veins like those pictured, vein wave or microneedle RF is often my go to method.  Lasers can also work well.  Please be aware that any method can require multiple treatments, and it does not stop the formation of new ones.Good luck to you,Dr. Powell

As others have said, SmartLipo generally works well in the neck and I am sorry you are having issues.  The good news is it can still get better.  Liposuction of any kind takes a full 6 months to recover and obtain the final results.  That being said, I would seek an in person consultation with another Doctor/ doctors, as well as your treating surgeon, to see if there are other modalities that can help with the recovery and getting you the results you are hoping to achieve.Part of the bands could be from the underlying platysmal muscle.  These sometimes become more prominent after the fat is removed.  They can be treated with Botox, or sometimes ligation.There also still can be scar tissue/ swelling that needs time to resolve.Good luck to you,Dr. Powell

I am 31 years old and I recently underwent a chin smart Lipo and reg tummy lipo. Both procedures were botched. My neck now looks FAR worse than before. The procedure was performed 5/31. I personally do not believe this physician should be practicing. I know I have to fix my tummy, but at this time, the chin takes precedence, as it is something I see everyday. I have developed a bulge underneath my neck w some striations. I am unsure if this is fat, fluid collection etc. Please help!

Hello,Sorry for your concerns.  Based on the photos, it looks like you have staining from sclerotherapy.  This is one of the most common side effects from the procedure.  A lot of it will fade with time, but it takes time.  Studies have shown 90% will fade at a year.  It is important to stay out of the sun or use sun screen during that period, or the areas could darken.Potassium oxide creams may help. Lasers have been tried, but most are expensive and do not really speed up the process.As for new spider veins, these often appear after treatments due to an inflammatory response.  Again, these will often fade with time, usually within 6 months.  If they do not resolve, additional sclerotherapy may be needed.I am curious as to whether you had venous reflux in veins below the surface, and would suggest a full venous doppler/ evaluation if it was not done.  If there was larger veins below the surface that did not close, then this could contribute to the issues.Last you mentioned thrombosis.  I often have my patients come back in 1-2 weeks after sclerotherapy, and if there is thrombosis we drain it to help speed up the recovery.Good luck to you,Dr. Powell

I have done expensive 1,3k sclerotherapy treatment and it’s been 5 months, and my legs look worse than ever. Whatever was light view of veins before is now full on bruises. The doctor (best in town) said it’s all ok, did ultrasound, i have few trombosis, but he says the effect is exactly as it should be. Plus i have now lots of new spider veins all over, which I did not have before.

Hello,I treat both men and women the same.  First, you need a venous doppler (ultrasound) to look at the underlying anatomy and vein function.  Based on this a treatment plan could be formed.I use radiofrequency vein ablation or Venaseal glue for larger veins, and sclerotherapy for surface veins and smaller branches.  I do all my procedures in the office under local anesthesia.  I do not recommend vein stripping, as this is a traumatic procedure that often causes worse problems down the road.Good luck to you,Dr. Powell

Hello,Doing sclerotherapy now is fine and should not effect any future surgery.  See a vein specialist or someone with experience doing sclerotherapy.As far as cost, it can vary from region to region, but I would guess $350-$600 for a session, but you may need more than one session to get complete results.

I'd like to get Sclerotherapy done to my breasts. I would like to get a breast lift and possible augmentation but not for another year as I'm in the process of taking off weight. Would it be ok to get the Sclerotherapy now and how much might it run for 4 or 5 veins total? Thank you!

The vein behind your thigh and knee is often a tributary from the GSv or the SSV.  Often if sclerotherapy alone is done, and the underlying vein is refluxing, the treatment won't work or be as effective.  So treating the GSV may have been indicated, as well as sclerotherapy to get rid of the vein you could see.  A lot depends on what was found on the initial ultrasound and work-up.Hope this helps,Dr. Powell
