Can you put moisturizer under Tri-luma? (Photo)

Question

I have dry skin and I was prescribed triluma for some pih I had after a chemical peel and I also wanted to lighten some freckles I normally put moisturizer under my tretinoin so I was wondering can I do the same with triluma or would it change it’s effacay?

I recommend following up with your cosmetic dermatologist for recommendations for moisturizers when using Triluma. PIH can be improved with a combination of Cosmelan, lasers, Aerolase, microneedling/prp, skin lightening, peels, and skin care. Sun protection is essential. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Yes, in fact this is beneficial as Triluma with the HQ and Vitamin A can be irritating to your skin. Moisturise several times a day, and yes, apply 30- 60 min before and after Triluma application. May I suggest the use of dermal toning with a 1064 laser as well. This will give added benefit in the context of melasma treatments. Dr Isobel Walker. Brisbane Australia.

Yes you can. Best timing is 30 minute before and 1-2 hours after Triluma. This will decrease skin irritation. Melasma is a very common cause of skin pigmentation. It can not be completely cured, however effective treatment are possible. This is because your skin is extremely sensitive to UV and even the smallest amount can stimulate your pigment cells to produce colour. The mainstay of treatment is strict UV protection- hats, sunglasses and SPF every 4 hours. This forms the foundation of all treatments.
I prefer to use a combination of creams and laser for melasma. Hydroquinone can be used (5-8%), along with vitamin A creams or Meladerm. I start my patients on laser (low dose Q switch or Picosure) as this has shown to decrease pigment production. Another laser I use is the Clear and Brilliant in the 1927 Permea setting combined with creams. IPL should never be used to treat mixed melasma as it often worsens the condition (this is termed ‘Rebound Melasma’)
  
In some cases I combine glycolic AHA peels, and in other cases I use a tablet called Tranexamic acid to help. Melasma treatments should be tailored to each patient.
