Will a collagen supplement increase risk of capsular contracture?

Question

Per doctor’s orders, I am currently taking 400 IU of vitamin E 5 times a day to help soften the capsule on my left side after breast aug 7-8 weeks ago. Meanwhile, I am considering taking a collagen supplement for other unrelated health benefits. However, After reading about the role collagen plays in forming scar tissue, I am wondering if this would be counter productive to healing aesthetically after BA. Possible?

Dear kcupmomma,Capsular contracture happens. In fact, every implant has a capsule form around it, its just a certain percentage develop thick capsules. There is a lot we don't know about it actually. Some think that bacteria that gets on the implant during insertion can increase the risk. Thats why we use a Keller Funnel in our practice to reduce that possibility. Our capsular contracture rate is less than 2% because we use a keller funnel as well as meticulous operating room techniques.Daniel Barrett, MD

Adding collagen to your diet has not been shown to increase the risks of CC. Antibiotic irrigation, a no touch technique, texturing of the breast implant and under the muscle placement can reduce the risks of CC.See my video linked next.

It would be so great if you could just take a pill and prevent or treat capsular contracture.  Unfortunately it is not that easy.  I am unaware of any studies that say Vitamin E or collagen supplements will affect contracture.  Sorry.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  Neither Vitamin E, nor collagen supplementation, will reduce/increase your risk of capsular contracture after your breast augmentation.  Hope this helps.

There is no evidence that any supplements can increase the likelihood of post-operative capsular contracture after Breast augmentation. The likelihood of capsular contracture  mostly is dependent on the surgical technique.  It is always best to consult with your plastic surgeon about any issues that you might be having.
