Scar management at almost 9 mos post op

Question

I had benelli lift and implants. My scars are thick and widened (tho not keloid or hytrophic), what's best scar management at this point- massage? What should I massage/ moisturize with? Lasers? Are silicone sheets useful at this point for thickened scars? Scar gel? All suggestions taken

Hi there, the main drawback of a Benelli incision is its potential to spread over time. The scars spread as the tension of the outer skin circle of skin pulls on the areola. So our best way of avoid a stretched, pink, thick scar is to counteract this tension. It's not pretty and a bit of a nuisance, but I would suggest strong taping (i.e. double layer) with micropore or elastoplast of the scars. Your surgeon should have some suggestions on what has worked with his/her past patients. Scars love pressure and support.

Typically at this point I recommend my patients most importantly wear good support. The support is important because it helps take some of the tension off the skin/incision. The less tension on the incision the better the incision will heal. As far as a scar treatment I recommend silicone sheets for patients that have tried scar creams, and not seeing the improvement they should be at this point. Also refrain from tanning or from sun exposure. Some patients inquire about tanning thinking it will help the incisions blend. SUn exposure actually does the opposite causing the incisions to darken.
