Dry sore eyes after Botox? Two days ago I got botox on my forehead and my crows feet areas.

Hi and thank you for your question! While the dry eye can be an unrelated process, it can also be related to the Botox treatment. I recommend doing a follow up with your doctor. If this is indeed a side effect of botox, it will be temporary and wear off and in the meanwhile, you might need to use eye drops to help with dryness. I hope it helps and good luck! 

Your Botox treatment may be impacting your ability to close your eyes completely. It takes 1-2 weeks for final results with Botox. If you're unhappy with your final results, Botox results can be softened with venus legacy and thermage treatments. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist. Unfortunately, dry eyes are known, but uncommon, adverse effects of neuromodulators, such as Botox.   This is due to the inability to blink and close fluidly, the reduction of tear production, or the combination of both as a result of Botox's inhibition of neurotransmitters to muscles and lacrimal glands, respectively. Until the effects of Botox wear off, you may want to try artificial tears four times a day or more often as needed. If you end up needing artificial tears more than four times a day, you might want to use ones with no preservatives or consider trying thicker ones such as gel drop. For more severe dry eyes, I also recommend lubricating ointment. Celluvisc gel and Refresh PM are preservative-free.

I am sorry to hear that there are some concerns.Based on what I hear, at this time I would recommend speaking to your physician so he/she can address the concerns. 

Unfortunately this can be a side effect of botox.  It occurs when the glands that lubricate the eyes are relaxed and the eyelid is not able to close.  You should contact your provider who can advise you.  Usually eye drops will help.

Botox paralyzes muscles. In so doing, it improves wrinkles by keeping the overlying skin to wrinkle as the muscles contract. The muscles that contract causing crows feet are also the muscles that cause the eyes to blink. The most likely scenario is that the Botox injected to improve your crows feet weakened the blinking muscles to the point that your blink is incomplete, thus causing your eyes to dry out. Botox is at its strongest in the first week or so and then weakens modestly, staying at the modestly weakened state for 3-4 months, so your condition will likely improve in a week or so. The worst case scenario is that your eyes will be uncomfortable for a few months. Whether its a few days or a few months, the temporary solution is to use artificial tears frequently. If that doesn't help, convert to artificial tears with the word 'gel' in the name. Those are slightly more thick and thus moisturized better, but aren't as thick as gooey ointment. Lastly, tell your provider about what happened so he/she can reduce the dose or number of injections next time. Good Luck!

I am sorry to hear about your troubles having this rare side effect of Botox known as dry eye. Speak to your treating physician or an ophthalmologist and you can even ask a pharmacist to suggest good eye drops that will keep your eyes lubricated. Good luck from New York City
