Great question! Generally patients need a series of lab work (blood draw) and medical clearance from a primary care physician to see if your body is optimized and safe for surgery. At the pre-op appointment, all the above is reviewed and the paperwork is signed and payments processed.Best of luck and hope this information helps!- Dr. Roger Tsai Board Certified Plastic Surgeon
In general, patients above the age of 45 should get medical clearance for any surgery requiring general anesthesia. In healthy patients under 45, medical clearance is generally not mandatory. Your primary care provider or lab can fax the results of the blood work and other tests required by your PS to his/her office.Kenneth Hughes, MD, ABPS Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA
Dear marilynM89,every plastic surgeon has his own preoperative protocol which he recommends to his patients. I would suggest you to discuss this with your plastic surgeon.Daniel Barrett, MDCertified, American Board of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
This is a very general question and I would assume you mean for “medical clearance.” Most surgeons would require a blood count (CBC or H/H) along with electrolyte panel (Potassium alone or full panel). If you have medical problems you may be required to get an EKG, chest x-ray and/or medical clearance from another physician (PCP, cardiologist, etc.)The best advice I could give would be to select a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a member of ASPS or ASAPS. They will have the best ability to make sure you have a safe and successful procedure.
pre-operative simply means before surgery. More than anything else this should include an in person consultation assessing your candidacy for the procedure. This involves an examination, thorough history and potentially ordering tests or a valuations depending on what is appropriate for each individual. In reality most people don't need any tests before having elective cosmetic surgery but there is no substitute for a proper evaluation, exam and history. For people with underlying medical conditions things can be very different. Trying to make real self substitute for a proper consultation or preoperative visit is not a very good idea. Each provider will have their own protocols. Good luck, Mats Hagstrom MD
360 Lipo and BBL requires lab work and surgical clearance from your surgeon. if you are malnourished, a prealbumin and albumin are helpful. You blood count and clotting factors should also be checked. A consultation with a BBL specialist would be very helpful.
