The optimal candidate for any elective cosmetic procedure is healthy and has reached a stable weight with which they are content (preferably with a BMI < 30). The issue is less of medical danger but rather cosmetic outcome. When considering post partum surgery, many patients will take several months to stabilize as hormonal fluctuations subside. Breastfeeding can play a role in how quickly one reaches this plateau. With that in mind, any surgery should be delayed at least 6 months or 3 months post cessation of breast feeding (whichever is longer). The issue of passage of medication in breast milk should be considered. However, this is not typically a significant concern and is easily accommodated. Out an abundance of caution most will suggest a "pump and dump" strategy until the meds have cleared (a few days after stopping medication). As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).Donovan Rosas MD Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery Member: American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons RealSelf Top 100 RealSelf Hall of Fame
