Sneezed through nose 4 days post op of Rhinoplasty. Will I be okay?

Question

I sneezed through my nose 2 times one right after the other and the second time the snot that came out was all bloody. I didn't have any pain, discomfort or any bleeding after that. Only the snot was bloody that came out during the sneeze. I didn't notice the color of the first sneeze though, so that one was probably not even significant enough to consider. Will I be okay? I tried sneezing through my mouth but I'm just terrible at it and I don't think I've ever done it before in my life.

The primary problem with sneezing after rhinoplasty is that it can push air through your internal nasal incisions, and bacteria can go in with the air and mucous. It is generally safe but best avoided as much as possible. Continue following your surgeons instructions, sneeze or cough with your mouth open.

Sneezing is one of those things we tell patients to try not to do, but seriously, if you gotta sneeze you gotta sneeze!The good thing is, in the VAST majority of cases sneezing won't do too much. Patients often sneeze in the recovery room right after surgery when they are still sedated. If you are worried, see your surgeon but I would tell my patients to rest assured. James P. Great question,Although we would like to say that every post op rhinoplasty patient has been able to control sneezing I am sure that many, many patients have experienced the same thing you have. I personally have not seen any negative effects of sneezing on a rhinoplasty. A quick call to your surgeon to let them know would be in order, especially if your concerned. It's highly likely sneezing after rhinoplasty will affect the outcome. If you have any concerns call your surgeon but I really don't think you have anything to be worried about.

Beside being painful, the pressure on the nose could displace the nasal bone, though a well applided splint can protect you. It might be best to contact your surgen to be sure everyting is in place.

Thanks for your question. You should be fine, but if you're worried then please consult with your plastic surgeon. For the first few days, you should continue to sleep 
with your head elevated and apply cold compresses to reduce swelling. 
You will need to refrain from taking aspirin and certain 
anti-inflammatory drugs that can increase bleeding. In addition, for 8 
weeks following surgery, you should avoid hitting or rubbing the nose. 
Sun exposure should be limited for two months.
Most patients can return to work in 7-10 days, and resume exercise in three to four weeks.

You are likely ok.  I caution patients about sneezing or blowing their nose against obstruction in the early weeks post surgery because of the fragility of the narrowed nasal bones (if performed).  It sounds like that didn't happen, so you should be ok.  Return to your doctor for a follow-up if you are concerned.
