Is it safe to have a breast augmentation when I may have an infected tooth?

I would recommend resolving your tooth infection prior to proceeding with implant surgery. The risk of having seeding of your plants grimacing urgent infection is higher than the norm, and not worth the risk. Best wishes!

If you do get an abscess from the bad tooth and your implants get infected then a huge problem. I would not take that risk for a member of my family. Good Luck!

Dear Bella,   If you do not have pain or swelling around the tooth,  most likely you do not have infection. However, if your dentist put you on antibiotics, he might suspect that you do have it. So , until you get clearance from your dentist in regard to the tooth problem, I would recommend to postpone the surgery. Your surgery is puerly elective and the risk of breasts infection due to the tooth is not worth it.         All the best,                           Dr Widder

In general, it is a very bad idea to have any elective surgery, especially if a foreign body like a breast implant implant is going to be used, if you have an ongoing infection. I would be shocked if your plastic surgeon would even  agree to do your surgery in such a situation. Be patient. Take care of your infection. Infection in another part of the body can lead to spread of the bacteria to a new surgical site through the blood stream.  Placement of a breast implant in the chest, if there is a dental infection, can expose the implant, breast pocket, and incision to the risk of infection.It is advisable that you be sure that there is no infection around the root canal before proceeding with the breast augmentation.  Let your plastic surgeon know about the issue now, so that he can discuss it with your dentist.  The two of them should work together to be sure that there is no risk of infection to your breast augmentation outcome, before proceeding with an elective, cosmetic procedure.Your plastic surgeon will understand, if you need to reschedule your breast augmentation.  He will want the best outcome for you.  You must share this information about the possible tooth infection with him.You are being smart and proactive to address this!  Your question will assist other patients who may face this same situation.  Thank you!

you definitely should not have a BA if you have an infected tooth. it needs to be fully resolved before your BA. you don't want your infected tooth seeding the breast implants as that would be a major problem.don't worry about delaying your surgery. your surgeon will want you to and you will need a clearance from your dentist.good luckdavid berman md

I would highly advise that you take care of the dental issue first.  It is very important that a patient not have any active infection at the time of surgery.  

Thank you for your question.  It is best to have your infected tooth treated appropriately and the infection is eliminated before having breast augmentation.  The concern is that any  infection in the body could potentially spread to breast implants if breast augmentation is done while the infection still exists.Please alert your plastic surgeon to the fact that you have a dental infection in my practice your surgery be canceled until that infection is cleared up.
