I imagine once the explant procedure is complete, initially there will be some volume due to swelling that resulted from the surgery itself and fluid retention. In your experience, is the difference in size significant from say 3 days post op vs 5 months post op? I understand the shape will change, but specifically the size? Thank you!
Answer: Post-op swelling Hello, thank you for your question. Yes, you're absolutely right—swelling and fluid retention after breast implant removal (explant) can result in some temporary volume loss in the first few days after the surgery. This volume is typically not permanent, and as the swelling subsides over time, the size of the breast can appear smaller. Please see the attached video to address your question. In conclusion, you can expect a noticeable difference in size between 3 days post-op (with swelling) and 5 months post-op, and the reduction in size is typically significant, often around 10-20% of the initial volume. The final size will depend on individual factors like skin elasticity, implant size, and how your body heals, but the volume reduction from swelling is temporary and should resolve during the healing process.

Answer: Implant removal and swelling Dear indigosky4, you are right, every surgery will cause tissue swelling. However, that swelling will go down with time. If you are considering surgery, I would suggest you consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination, you will get more information and recommendations. Answer: Swelling Swelling is common and expected after surgery. There will be a difference between the time in early recovery compared to 5 months post op. Significant is a tough word to define, but no there should not be a sizable volume difference (ie. several bra cup sizes) from swelling resolution. Often patients wear support bras or compression after surgery to help minimize swelling and to support healing tissues.

Answer: How much volume is lost after explant due to swelling going down? Hello @indigosky4, thank you for your question. Actually, it really depends on the surgical technique. However, the swelling of the breast is not so substantial as to have a significant change in the posterior breast volume. If you are considering a breast explantation, consultation with a plastic surgeon who is experienced in this procedure is essential to ensure optimal results. Best wishes! Alan Gonzalez MD, FACS.
