Had a breast reduction/lift 3 weeks ago. While in the shower a scab came off. was that my nipple that came off?

Both nipples was grafted on and both were scabbed but the scab on my right breast came off. I'm so worried that the scab was my actual nipple. Can you please give me some answers?

After free nipple grafting, often the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) will slough to varying depths, depending on the robustness of the blood supply to the skin graft, which is always quite thick. I always caution that the nipple will be much less projecting after free nipple grafting, and final results are not present until up to a year after surgery, so some patience will be in order. Regarding the scab coming off of your nipple, I would consult with your surgeon. This may have just been the outer layer of the nipple, and not the actual nipple itself coming off. Underneath you may see a shiny pink layer which is new skin on the grafted portion, and should not be worrisome. Any pigment to the nipple should start to come back slowly over time and can be expected to come back in a patchy pattern which is temporary.

Thanks for your question. I would not be concerned that this was your nipple. Scabs form and they do sometimes fall off. Contact your surgeon if you are concerned. Best of luck!

I would not be concerned. Often scabs form over the nipple following grafting and occasionally these can come off. It is likely this will re scab. If you have concerns send a pic to your PS for reassurance.
