When will forehead movement return after Botox?

With Botox, your body generates new nerve terminals that result in the return of muscle function over time. Each patient's body metabolizes Botox at a different rate. It may take up to six months, but your muscles will eventually regain their original strength and your natural expressions will return!

Hi. Botox result would typically last 3-4 month. It can last longer on certain people. Rest assure that the effect will eventually wear off gradually.  

Usually, Botox will last 2.5 months to 3 months in the forehead.  If there was more than the normal amount of Botox injected, then it can last another 1-2 months.

Dear Annnnnoooo,Botox is generally an on off switch for muscle activity. I get a fair amount of actors/actresses in my practice that are looking to reduce wrinkles but keep some expression. Finding an experienced physician injector is your best bet.Most of patients see first changes after 4-7 days and the final results after 10-14 days.It depends on the amount of Botox and area where it is injected but it usually last for 3-4 months.Daniel Barrett, MD

The effect of this product may vary, each patient is different but commonly it takes up to 6 months for the movement to return, it fades away progressively so you will be able to move your forehead more and more in time until you recover movement completely. If you´re not happy with the results you can discuss it with your plastic surgeon and maybe he can adjust the treatment to your needs and expectations.

Thank you for your question Annnnnoooo. I understand your concern. Botox is a purified protein used to address wrinkles associated with facial expression. When injected into the skin Botox will relax the muscles and smoothen out the overlying wrinkles. The most common areas of treatment are in the upper face. These include the horizontal lines seen on the upper forehead when one raises the brows, the vertical lines seen between the brows when one frowns (frown lines), and the crow's feet seen around the eyes when one smiles.It is difficult to make an assessment in the absence of consistent photographs before and after in the same lighting and angles for comparison. However, I hope the information provided here is useful.The appearance of frown lines is variable from person to person. Usually they are in a vertical orientation but sometimes they can be oblique and sometimes a horizontal line is seen across the upper portion of the nasal bridge. The most common variation is to have two parallel lines, hence the common term "11's" to describe them. But some people have one, three, or more lines. Some people also will see a bulge in the area when contracting the muscle. This bulge is smoothened out after a Botox treatment.The pivotal studies used 20 units of Botox in the glabella area between the brow to address the frown lines, 24 units of Botox (12 units per side) to address the crow’s feet, and 20 units of Botox in the forehead area above the brows to address the horizontal lines seen when one raises the brows. These studies demonstrated that the peak results are seen 14 days after the treatment and most people enjoy their results for 3-4 months. At that point, a maintenance treatment is recommended. While some people start to see results as early as the next day, it can take two weeks for full results so patience is important. We have our patients return two weeks after their treatment to assess their results via photographs. At that time additional units may be added if necessary.If I had a patient with the concern described here I would recommend being patient. Since a lower dose than that used in the pivotal studies was used, the duration of effect may be less than three to four months. With before and after photographs it may be possible to recommend placement of additional units to achieve the desired results.With any injection, there are risks such as pain, bleeding, bruising, redness, swelling, tenderness, and infection. We take special precautions to minimize these risks such as using a painless technique. We also treat bruises with a laser as early as the next day. Bruises usually resolve within two weeks if untreated. After a laser treatment bruises usually resolve in 1-3 days, but may still take two weeks for full resolution. In addition to these risks, with Botox there is also a risk that the product spreads or diffuses to nearby structures. Spread to nearby muscles can lead to side effects such as the temporary appearance of droopy eyelids or a temporary asymmetric smile.

After a Botox treatment, I recommend that my patients avoid heat exposure, alcohol consumption, and strenuous exercise for 24 hours and not lie down flat for four hours. This is because all of these activities may possibly lead to the movement of the product and consequent side effects such as droopy eyelids. Although there have been no definitive studies shown that these actually occur and some physicians do not provide such aftercare instructions, in the absence of data I err on the side of caution and recommend that my patients avoid such activities.

Sorry to hear you weren’t happy with your BOTOX® results. You should start to notice a gradual transition back to your normal appearance soon, as BOTOX usually lasts around 3 to 4 months. However, for some people, this can take longer, so you may need to be a bit patient as it starts to fade away. Thank you for your question! Botox is great for minimizing muscle movement and lasts approximately 3-4 months. However, you may have unlearned the habit of expressing with those particular muscles, due to decreased usage. It may take a bit longer to wear off, for several different reasons, but in time normal muscle movement will resume. Best of luck!
