Hydroquinone makes skin itchy and red. Does this mean I can't do a melanage peel?

I have melasma and got the melanage peel done a few years ago. I loved the results and would like to do it again. However, I've noticed that when i use hydroquinone cream on mg face I develop patches of red itchy skin. This makes me think I've developed an allergy to hydroquinone. I don't fet this all over my face- just in spots. Does this mean I can't do a melanage peel?

Sensitization or allergy to hydroquinone is see quite often. If you are having a reaction, I would avoid hydroquinone products and opt for non-HQ skin lighteners such as Melarase AM and Melapads. Best, Dr. Karamanoukian Los Angeles

Chemical peels, by nature are irritants. Whether I use Lactic acid, Glycolic, TCA or Vitamin A peels, I always stop the HQ 4-5 days BEFORE the peel, then recommence the HQ 7 days -10 days later.  If you have an allergy to HQ, you can test this by placing a tiny bit on your inner arm.....if you react, you are indeed allergic. (Very rare)Best wishesDr Davin Lim Laser Dermatologist.
