Does a Chin Implant set off metal detectors?

I was having a talk with a friend and we had a strange convo about this: do the screws or whatever holds the implant in place set off detectors at the airport? They ask if you have anything in your body like that, so I was wondering. Thanks!

Thank you for the question.  Most chin implants are silastic and if used, fixation screws are made from titanium.  Neither substance is ferromagnetic and you should have no concerns with metal detectors.

Typically no.  Depending on what procedure was done for your chin (sliding genioplasty vs medpor implant vs. silicone vs silastic etc etc) things may be secured in different ways.  Typically if any screws are used they are titanium, which will not set off metal detector and are MRI safe.  If there were any screws used during your surgery, your physician would let you know beforehand and, typically, give you a FAQ about what you can and can't do.  Long story short - check with your doc.  I personally do not use titanium screws unless I'm doing a sliding genioplasty (which is becoming more and more rare these days for me).  Best of luck!

Typically the screws that are used (if at all) for chin implants are made of titanium.  Titanium is not ferromagnetic and therefore will not set off metal detectors.  They will show up on x-rays and other imaging modalities though.  You'd need to check with your doctor to ask what they used to secure the implant.
