Question

Hello: I have a long, flat philtrum and thin upper lip. Is there anything that can be done? Also, I have read that this could be indicative of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and wanted to see if that is a possibility or cause. Thank you very much.

From your photo, you appear to be a good candidate for a lip lift.  A lip lift does 4 things: shortens the distance between your nose and upper lip, increases the mucosa of the upper lip, increases the incisor show and pulls up the corners.  Best Wishes,Gary Horndeski, M.D.

This can be shortened with an M type lip lift and fat augmentation of the lips. The lip lift scar will not be seen if properly done and in 45 years of doing these I have never had an infection and have never had to do a scar revision. A thin upper lip can be pulled up and appear more full using a lip lift procedure where the incision is hidden under the natural crease of your nose. A non-surgical option is to use fillers to thicken the upper lip however this does not actually shorten the lip. FAS will have other signs and symptoms beyond a long upper lip. Hope this helps!
