Juvederm and Restylane under eye swelling started 2 months after injection.

Question

Had Juvederm for under eye hollows. Juvederm removed from left eye due to swelling & pink color under eye that started about 2 months after injection & wouldn't resolve. Subsequently, had touch up Restylane under right eye ('old' Juvederm still there). Now swelling under rt eye after 1 month. I have allergies & always have a stuffy nose at night - swelling worse in AM but doesn't go away during day. Before the fillers no puffiness-love the fillers: -dr doesn't know why- ideas? Belotero?

dancer1239, In patients using the HA fillers under the eyes, it is not uncommon to experience swelling, redness and a bluish discoloraton called the Tyndall effect. I have had patients who initially experienced symptoms similar to yours weeks or months later. Also patients have reported increased incidence after eating sushi, drinking alcohol and during menses. The use of a hyaluronidase usually resolves the issue but may take multiple sessions, using small amounts to preserve the desired "fill" effect. Later, upon repeat treatment, I recommend Belotero, which seems to have less of these side effects but may not last as long. PRP under the eyes used alone or in conjunction with Belotero provides a very good natural look with less side effects. If the skin is also loose or "crepe" a Fraxel laser is used to tighten the under eye area. Good luck and have a wonderful day.

This is difficult to answer without pictures. I recommend following up with your injector for a formal evaluation. If necessary, this can be reversed with hyaluronidase. For under the eyes, I recommend combination approach will give the most improvement. Fillers, lasers, and microneedling/PRP can improve under the eyes. My patients try to get non surgical treatments to avoid surgery. We use PRP and stem cells there often. Juvederm and restylane Are both hydrophilic and can plump up over time. I see many patients from other doctors with swollen under eyes with discoloration from juvederm and restylane and I remove it with hyaluronidase. I don't advise using those fillers in that area generally speaking. it seems to be a common procedure but it has a high rate of swelling and discoloration. It's easy to reverse though with hyaluronidase. I've seen the swelling and discoloration last three years in some patients.

Your specialist will have their own regime for this. Its thought to be a possible cross reaction between allergens such as bacteria, virus, or even sinus infections (possible in your case). Your injector will know how to take steps to exclude infection, and subside this swelling with abs, anti-inflammatory agents, anti-histamines and last line Hylase.
