What's the difference between lovenox and coumadin?

I had gastric bypass surgery in 2006. Due to major weight loss (134lbs) I have a lot of excess skin which causes me to suffer from recurring boils and it's a major blow to my self esteem. I had a major stroke at 32 yrs old due to a blood clot in my carotid artery,my hematologist says that I have to take coumadin for life. I want to have a tummy tuck but the surgeon requires me to stop coumadin for 2 months 1 month pre-op and 1 month post op

I agree with Dr Rumalla.  Coumadin is usually stopped a week before.  Lovenox is used to keep you anti-coagulated during the first week or two before you convert back to coumadin.  Definitely have your hematologist discuss this with your surgeon.  Remember, even with Lovenox, there still is a risk of blood clots; just a lower risk.

Thanks for your inquiry, lovenox and coumadin are both blood thinners that work in different ways.  I am not sure why your doctor has recommended you stop the coumadin for so long.  Usually, you stop coumadin the week before surgery-change to lovenox and continue lovenox for a week or two after surgery before re-starting your coumadin.  My advice is you see your hematologist to discuss your surgical plans.  Good Luck.

Both are blood thinners. Coumadin takes longer to kick in and more difficult to reverse. Patients are usually weaned off Coumadin and started on Lovenox during and after surgery. Coumadin will be resumed if all is well in terms of your recovery. You need to be carefully evaluated and cleared for this major surgery. Having prior blood clots will put you in a higher risk category. I recommend having your surgety in a hospital rather than a surgery center for safety and better control. Good luck.
