I just underwent a FUE procedure about 9 days ago. Now I have history with minoxidil based products, so I'm well aware of the shedding process and what not. But my question is, can the minoxidil also make the new transplanted hairs shed as well? My Doctor told me I could start using minoxidil after one week post op, but I'm going to wait until all my scabs and crust are gone.
Answer: Minoxidil and hair transplant I would not recommend stopping minoxidil for a long period of time following hair transplants as most experienced surgeons have seen patients who had significant hair loss by doing this. A week or two should be fine, but you should follow your surgeons specific recommendations.

Answer: Minoxidil Usually minoxidil is good to use after the hair is grown. If you use minoxidil during the period of hair growth for long term it might cause dermatitis, that is why it is not suggested.

Answer: Shedding Post-Op It is unlikely the minoxidil is having either a positive or negative effect on shedding. The shedding is part of the healing process, and you would have this shedding with or without the minoxidil. We have heard that minoxidil helps with speeding up the growth process, but we have not had that experience with our patients. Either way, the permanent growth should begin sometime around the 3rd month post-op.

Answer: No Minoxidil should not cause any shedding The shedding phase following a hair transplant is totally normal and you shouldn't be alarmed. Less than 5% of the patients actually retain these "hairs". At our clinic we recommend waiting 2 weeks post op before getting back on a minoxidil regimen OR to wait for all the scabs / crust to have fallen out. Minoxidil should not cause any shedding.
