Botox vs Kybella in jaw/ chin?

The only way to accurately answer your question is to see photos or better yet, consult in person. If you only have a small amount of fat under your chin and your skin quality is good, then I would recommend Kybella, which is a minimally invasive way to contour your submental area. If it is your platysmal muscle that is causing a widening of your neck and ill-defined jawline than Botox might be the right option for you.  When injected in the right places and right amounts it can result in what we call the Nefertiti lift. If your skin is at all loose, I'd recommend adding in Ultherapy or ThermiTight to tighten the skin and make your jawline sleeker. Consulting a board-certified dermatologist will allow you to receive an in-depth evaluation so you can make decisions on the best treatments to give you the results you desire.

The indications for Botox and Kybella are very different.  Botox is primarily used to address wrinkle lines in the upper face.  Kybella is indicated to treat and dissolve excess fat under the chin.  Kybella usually requires at least 2 treatments.  Consult with your plastic surgeon to see if you are a good candidate.  

This is difficult to answer without pictures. However, based on your description, you may be a candidate for Kybella. For best results with Kybella, I recommend a combination approach with thermage, ultherapy, exilis. VASER liposuction in combination with ThermiRF is an alternative for contouring the chin, if you're a candidate. These two medications do completely different things. Botox temporarily weakens muscle function and can be used to treat neck muscle bands or overly large chewing muscles in the posterior jawline area (master muscle). It will not work to thin fat under the chin. This is what Kybella does. Kybella dissolves fat cells and is ideal for patients with fat under the chin and jawline area.

Thank you for your question.  Botox is not typically used to slim the chin area. Botox can be used on the chin muscle (mentalis) to smooth the dimpling effect creating a softer chin. Fillers such as Radiesse or Juvederm Voluma are often used to increase the vertical dimension of the face, define the chin/ jawline and build structure to the lower face.  Kybella is a great treatment option to slim and minimize the fat pad under the chin also known as the double chin.  Hope this information helps! 

Both products work well for various indications in this area. Kybella is very effective in dramatically defining the jaw by removing bulk in the submental (double chin area) as well as jowl areas. Botox works well in narrowing the jawline in patients with square jaws. I have also found Botox very effective in redefining the jaw and neck area of older patients by treating the Platysmal bands of the neck in a procedure called "Nefertiti Lift."

As BOTOX® is used to target fine lines and wrinkles in the upper face and doesn't remove fat at all, Kybella® would be far better for meeting your goals for the jaw and chin area. Kybella® is specifically intended to treat excess fat around the jaw and chin but, without examining you in person, it’s impossible to tell how suitable it may be in your particular case. Botox and Kybella are as different as night and day. Botox treats fine lines and wrinkles by paralyzing the underlying muscles. Kybella dissolves fat under the chin. So, I think it would be smart for you to schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon to be examined in person and discuss the best options for achieving a more defined jawline. 

Thank you for your question.  It's impossible to make exact recommendations without assessing you in-person or reviewing photos.  Generally speaking, while Botox can be used to improve the appearance of the chin and jawline, it will have no impact on fat deposits.  When Botox is used in this area, it's typically injected into the chin to reduce muscle activity that can lead to a pebbled appearance of the skin; into the masseter muscles to soften a square jaw or reduce teeth grinding/TMJ; into overactive glands in select patients where these glands contribute to fullness; or directly into the neck to reduce neck bands.
Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment to permanently reduce fat under the chin.  If you are primarily interested in fat-reduction, Kybella is almost certainly a better option.  I would recommend scheduling a consultation with a cosmetic dermatologist or plastic surgeon to discuss your options.  Best of luck!

Hi there, Kybella would be the way to go to remove the fat under your chin (or consider liposuction). Sometimes filler can be added to the chin to improve definition (or you can con consider a chin implant). Botox is sometimes used in the neck, but most commonly to treat neck bands (also called platysma bands) or to treat big chewing muscles in the side of the face (called masseter muscles).
