How many grams are equivalent to a cup size for a breast reduction?

Thank you for your question regarding breast reduction volume and breast cup size.   As you would expect, a petite patient having a reduction of, for example, 300 grams of tissue would have a more significant cup size reduction than a fuller-bodied patient having the same reduction volume.  This is because the fuller-sized patient likely has a larger ribcage, more body fat, and wider breasts than then more petite patient.  The fuller body dimensions correlate with greater numerical bra sizes and larger cups.However, in my experience, a woman of average height and weight wearing a 34 bra would reduce about a cup size with about 250 grams of tissue reduction.   Hope this helps!

Breast Reduction is a complicated procedure that is best done by those with the most training and experience. It is very difficult to determine the resultant cup size and shape based solely on the number of grams that are removed from your breast to best match your ideal breast image without an examination by a board certified plastic surgeon. Not just any board certified plastic surgeon, but one with many years of frequently performing breast reduction and lift surgeries, including different approaches, techniques and even fat transfer and implant choices if you are lacking superior breast fullness.This is because several measurements—not to mention breast characteristics such as density—are needed to determine how much and where to remove breast tissue to meet your goals. Without knowing your existing breast shape, dimensions, and the density of your breast tissue, it would be difficult to make this determination. Unfortunately the grams do not correlate to bra size so this question is difficult to answer. The best thing to do is to let your surgeon know approximately what cup size you are trying to achieve and he/she can try to best match you to your size. #PlasticSurgery #BreastReduction #brasize 

Unfortunately, one cannot attribute a measured amount of tissue removed or left behind to a specific cup size.  Cup size varies with respect to size and weight of the patient.  For example a women 5'1 may have 200gm removed at find herself with a C-cup while a taller women, say 5'9 may have 800 gms removed at still be a D.  I try to get my patients to focus on the idea of looking natural and proportional and not get too concerned over actual cup size.  You want to be the right size for your body and not be tied to a specific letter or number.

Congratulations on your decision to proceed with breast reduction surgery; breast reduction surgery tends to be one of the most patient pleasing operations we perform. Well experienced board-certified plastic surgeons will be able to give you a much better “estimate” in person than with online consultation. You will find that there is no accurate/reliable correlation between amount of tissue removed and specific cup sizes achieved. Remember, as you communicate your goals with your plastic surgeon, that a discussion of cup size can be confusing and/or a source of miscommunication. In my practice, I prefer the use of goal pictures to help with this communication process. Generally speaking, I suggest patients undergoing breast reduction surgery have enough tissue removed to help alleviate/decrease symptoms they are experiencing, while preserving enough tissue to feel comfortable about the upper and lower body proportionality.

Unfortunately, volume removal does not correlate well with cup size, because bra manufacturers are all different in their designs.

There  is no magic formula for translating grams into cup size.Furthermore all bras are different and one company's B may be another's C.Based on your preop size your doctor may have some anatomical restrictions in terms of how small they can go and still maintain a proper blood supply.In my practice as a general rule most women having a 1000-1200 gm reduction end up when healed in the C-D range depending on their goals and preop size
