I am 29 and have been told I am a candidate for buccal fat removal. However, I wonder if a jaw/chin implant might better address the area of concern: the shadow under my cheek, just beside my mouth. I only have it on one side of my face and I wonder if it's because I have a stronger chin on the other side...

You have two issues going on.  (1) Yes, it looks like there is some fullness in the buccal fat area.  That will be clarified with an in office examination. (2) You have fullness in the jowl area. This may be due to a lack of volume in the prejowl sulcus (the fold in front of that shadow), or, fullness of the skin behind. If it is the latter, we could use energy based treatment (such as accutite or facetite) to shrink the skin there. I've gotten good results for many people using a combination of these approaches.

Buccal fat pad removal is an ideal procedure for improving cheek and jawline definition while reducing a rounded appearance in the lower part of the face. Since the weight carried around the mouth will also be reduced with this procedure, it is likely to address the shadow effect you’re referring to. Your photos suggest that you are a good candidate for a chin implant. When your chin projects more in the horizontal plane, your face will appear thinner and the chin will be more feminine and less square. A chin implant will be your best option with minimal downtime and recovery.
