Can Sculptra be used on the hands?

Question

I'm trying to do something to improve both the skin texture and volume loss on my hands. I've tried a series of Fraxel laser and have also tried Radiesse several times, though nothing really helps. The Radiesse just makes my hands painful/swollen for a week or two then everything is back to square one. Would Radiesse be a good option? Or are there other things I should try? Thaks so much!

Sculptra is not typically recommended for hand rejuvenation, as this area is somewhat thin and can end up looking lumpy. Radiesse is usually the filler I use for minimizing the appearance of prominent veins on the backs of the hands. Another option would be sclerotherapy, which is an injectable treatment that delivers a sclerosing agent into the vein that collapses it so it disappears from view. 
If brown spots are a bigger concern, I offer Fraxel Dual and an Alexandrite laser, often in combination, to treat these aging symptoms. I encourage you to schedule a consultation with a board-certified dermatologist with expertise in customizing hand rejuvenation treatments to the unique needs of each patient. Through a thorough examination and discussion of your concerns and goals, your doctor can customize a treatment plan that works best for you.

Hi and thank you for your question! Based on your description you seem to be a good candidate for hand rejuvenation with fillers but it is surprising that apparently you didn't see the results you hoped. Is it possible that you didn't get the full recommended amount of filler? Also, I highly suggest that you do an accurate and objective comparison using pictures taken before the filler injections and hopefully you will be able to spot the results and improvements. For further treatment, fillers remain the main option and for hands, we usually use Radiesse or Juvederm but Sculptra is generally not recommended for hands. I hope it helps and good luck!

Thank you for your question.  I'm sorry that Radiesse makes your hands painful and swollen.  In my opinion Radiesse is the best for hand rejuvenation.  Results vary depending on the patient, therefore, you may need to get more treatments to maintain the look you desire.  I would suggest discussing your concerns with your physician in order to find ways to minimize the side effects.  All the best!

Sculptra may lead to firm, visible nodules when injected into the hands. The purpose of adding filler to the back of your hands is to hide visible veins and tendons that become visible with aging. Hand injections are not helpful for textural issues of the skin. We prefer using microdroplet Silikon1000 for permanent results. Thank you.

Thank you for your question. For hand rejuvenation, I recommend the combination of IPL treatments and Bellafill. IPL treatments promote collagen formation while reducing pigment irregularities. Bellafill is a bio-stimulator that produces new collagen. I injected Artefill (now called Bellafill) in my left hand in 2005 and there remains a dramatic difference when compared to my right hand. I usually combine the Bellafill with an HA filler or Radiesse and then dilute with normal saline so that it can be massaged and dispersed.I hope this was helpful - Dr. Moore.

Hello, I would recommend fat grafting to the hands.  Fat grafting is a permanent solution, while fillers typically last 6-12 months.  In addition fat contains stem cells that over time has shown to improve the quality of the overlying skin.

Thanks for your question.  The ultimate decision will rest with what you and your dermatologist decide, but we love a combination of Radiesse injected for long lasting volume correction, and either fractionated laser treatment, IPL or Q-switched laser treatment for pigment spots (age spots), or maybe a series of chemical peels for texture and color improvement.  Sculptra is not a good choice for hand injections as it can look lumpy and cause late-onset granulomas, or little balls of inflammatory nodules under the skin even years and years after injection.  Radiesse is a much more natural looking filler for hands and easy to inject if your dermatologist is experienced with it.  Best of luck!

My go to product for hands is Radiesse for traditional filler.  PRP can enhance and prolong results.  You do not mention the dose of Radiesse used in the past.  You may need 1.5 to 3 ml per hand depending on the amount of volume loss.  Ice application and arnica can reduce swelling and discomfort.  No treatment is permanent, unfortunately, thus, maintenance is required.
