I had a botched tracheal shave surgery a few years ago and my vocal cords become detached. My tone of voice is altered and I can't reach high notes. Can I recover my pitch with speech therapy? Or is surgery necessary?

It's hard to know. We'd need to take a look at your vocal cords to see what went on.  It's possible that we can restore the good pitch.  We do much pitch elevation and it is quite successful.

Amanda,Thanks for the question.  I think that a change in pitch after this surgery is usually due to a shortening of the vocal folds, and that restoring the length of the vocal folds would be the best surgical option.  Only an exam with stroboscopy and a clinical evaluation would tell us if you could benefit from a surgical lengthening procedure.  Speech therapy is a great solution, and I recommend my patients start it before any voice altering surgery, as it will help you rehab your voice after any surgery.  Hope this helps.
