How long should I keep stitches in for a broken nose? (external wound).

Question

I was elbowed in the face 10 days ago and received a broken nose and required stitches for a 1cm wound on my nose (external). I need plastic surgery to realign my nose but I am still waiting for the insurance to confirm authorisation for the operation. Do I need to go myself to get the stitches removed or shall I wait until the surgery (which i imagine will be approximately another week). I have taken my nose bandages off too, is this OK?

Many thanks for your question. In order to avoid stitch marks which are permanent you should have your stitches removed as soon as possible. Generally speaking they are removed less than seven days are surgery. All the best, Jonathan Adamthwaite FRCS (Plast).

Stitches after rhinoplasty or no surgery in general should come out after 5 to 7 days. This is also true when there is injury to the nose causing a laceration. The longer the stitches are in place, the greater the chance of having a noticeable scar.   Scars can be revised at a later date. But it would be best to have the stitches removed sooner than later.

Stitches should come out seven days after they are put in. Otherwise, they may leave marks and create inflammation which could increase scarring. If they are disolvable stitches they will obviously come out on their own.

The skin on the face and nose typically heals quickly, and 5 to 7 days would typically be the timeline for removal of sutures used for repair of wounds in these areas. However, if fine sutures were used to repair the wound on your nose, having them in place up to 10 days should not be a problem. I would advise that you have these sutures removed as soon as is feasible.
