Is swelling, bruises and hardness normal 3 days after Juvederm lip injections?

Thank you for your question. Bruising and swelling are very common symptoms and it may take more than a few days for them to clear up. They will subside given more time. 

Thank you for sharing your question and photographs and congratulations on your lip augmentation!  Swelling after filler placement into the lips is quite common due to the thin nature of the tissues.  This swelling, and your results, will steadily improve over the next 10-14 days.  It often takes up to 2 weeks for fillers to soften and the tissues to appear more natural.  In the meantime try reducing the swelling by using cold compresses to your lips and elevating your head at night with a couple of extra pillows behind your back.  You may want to also consider using Arnica Montana and bromelain as supplements.  Hang in there!

Yes, lip injections can cause swelling and/or bruising. This can last 1-2 weeks after lip injections. If you're unhappy with your final results, you can have it reversed with hyaluronidase and try a different technique next time. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

Hi, thank you for your question.  The first 48-72 hours after Juvederm injection is when swelling and tenderness is at its maximum.  Try applying a cool pack to your lips throughout the day and give it at least 2 weeks to settle and soften. 

Yes, this can be typical. Icing, arnica and cold compresses may give improvement. I would wait a full 2 weeks before judging the results. If it is after the two week wait, you can have the filler reversed with hyaluronidase.

We usually prepare patients for at least 3-4 days of significant bruising and swelling following juvederm in the lips.  The most significant downtime is the first 3-4 days, however, we do not even add additional product until a patient is 2 weeks post injection simply because some level of inflammation is still present.  Lips may swell a little lumpy, and the product can feel slightly firm even several weeks out.  Based on what you are describing, this is a normal reaction for 3 days post injection but always check with your provider to ensure this is normal bruising and swelling and does not require further attention.

Hi and thank-you for your question.  The lips comprise the area that bruises and swells the most following filler injection.  Most of the swelling/bruising will have settled at the 1 week mark.  The firmness should settle as the swelling settles - gentle massage can help as well.  I normally tell patients to wait 2 weeks before considering touch-ups.  Given it has only been 3 days since your injection was done, smiling will feel a bit unusual. This will improve over the next week or two.
