I am a male and looking into having a modest upper blepharoplasty. My concern is that I have glaucoma and am on daily eye drops. I also have damaged corneas and may have to have corneal grafts done in a few months / years time (at present that decision is mine). Would it be a bad idea to consider having upper blepharoplasty surgery on both upper eyelids?

Answer: The corneal graft is a bigger concern. Upper blepharoplasty, even the most uneventful blepharoplasty will have an effect on the force of eyelid closure. For most this is a non issue. However, for some patients the weaken orbicularis function makes them have a dry eye. In more extreme cases the eye surface can be subject to corneal breakdown. That is a terrible thing for a grafted cornea. Because innervation to the grafted cornea, these eyes are prone to increased problems. For these reasons, I recommend profound caution in considering cosmetic blepharoplasty. Don't get sweet talked by someone who is not first and foremost concerned about the health of your eyes.

Answer: Upper blephs If the upper blephs are done in a conservative fashion, it can be done even in the presence of corneal issues and glaucoma. The key is to be conservative and the eyelid closure is complete after surgery. The risks increase with lower blepharoplasty. RegardsDr. J
