I got otoplasty done 9 days ago, and the antihelix is really swollen, more so than the helix, so I'm not able to see the helix behind the ear. I feel I might have hematoma on the left ear, am I right?

Hello Abdul Ahad,Thanks for your question.By now, normal postoperative swelling should be fairly reasonable.I don't see the bluish tinge of the typical hematoma but it could be there.  What I think is more likely is excess swelling as if you have been sleeping on your left ear vs. acute chondritis.  Swelling can be managed by icing and turning your head more to the right when you sleep (but watch for excess swelling in the right ear.)Acute chondritis is an infection of your ear cartilage.  This needs antibiotics and possibly surgical drainage.I recommend that you see your surgeon as soon as possible for an exam and plan.Good luck,Dr. Shah

At this point in the healing process, this swelling could be normal, but a doctor can confirm this by palpation and/or needle aspiration. I would recommend going back to the doctor ASAP for confirmation.

While swelling after ear surgery is expected, and may very well be asymmetric, it's difficult to give you much specific information without an exam.  The more swollen ear may have a tiny hematoma (collection of blood underneath the skin) or chondritis (swelling of the ear cartilage).  To rule out/ treat these issues, my advice is for you to see your otoplasty surgeon for an in-person evaluation.  Good luck in your recovery!
