How often should you dermaplane your face?

I have a pack of Swan Mornton Surgical Blades No. 14 and I use them to dermaplane my skin at home. I dermaplane ONCE A WEEK as my form of exfoliating. I see many dermatologist say dermaplaning last for weeks or several months but I thought they might say that because they are talking about the results combined w/ expensive serums in office for a full facial. Dermaplaning just for the purpose of exfoliating - is once a week too much? Does once a week ruin the natural cycle of my skin?

Thank you for your question in regards to dermaplaning. It is typically recommended to dermaplane every 4-6 weeks. Dermaplaning to often can cause your skin to dry out as it is over exfoliating your skin. To be sure what is best for you, see two or more board-certified providers in your area for a complete evaluation to make sure you are a good candidate and that it is safe for you to have treatment. I hope this helps.

I would recommend being seen by a professional esthetician especially when using a surgical blade to your skin. Dermaplaning once a week may cause over exfoliation which can damage the skin barrier and cause sensitivity. I would suggest seeing a licensed esthetician every 3 to 4 weeks for a dermaplane session to allow your skin to resurface.

The frequency of dermaplaning depends on your skin type and condition. Most people will have it done once a month, which allows your skin time to resurface in between sessions.

Great question. First, I do not recommend performing dermaplaning to yourself at home for risk of injury. Dermaplaning, microdermabrasion and peels should not be done too often because you need to allow your skin time to regenerate. If you over-exfoliate your skin will dry out causing premature fine-lines/ wrinkles and patchy dry areas of skin. I recommend getting a good exfoliating facial every 4-6 weeks which allows time for cell turnover and for vellus hairs to grow again. Do not forget to moisturize and apply SPF after your facial!
