Do I need a cardiologist clearance for a mommy makeover? (BA, full tummy tuck with MR)

Question

I don’t have a heart condition but had Graves’ disease and was taking Propanolol to control palpitations. I had total thyroidecty almost 12 months ago and now on thyroxine and tsh is fine. I’m in the process of getting a clearance from my endocrinologist. I have an never seen a cardiologist, is it necessary or should I get one anyway? I’m hoping to have my surgery next month.

Hello and thank you for your question! Since you do not have ongoing cardiological problems or a regular cardiologist, you may not need cardiologist clearance before your surgery. However, every surgeon will have different requirements for this. You will need to ask your surgeon if they would prefer you to have clearance from a cardiologist or a different type of doctor. Be sure to tell them about symptoms and medications related to your cardiological concerns, both past and present. Best of luck!

Hello and thank you for your question. In the absence of a specific cardiac history, you should probably be able proceed without a cardiology clearance. I would seek consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon for a full evaluation and advice.

Different plastic surgeons will have different thresholds for obtaining medical clearance and for performing elective surgery. The endocrinologists are the experts on the diagnosis of Graves disease and will oversee medications before your surgery. I appreciate your concern, however if you do not have any history of heart problems, medical clearance from your endocrinologist should be all you need. Of course the final decision should be made by your board certified plastic surgeon. In any event, medical clearance is recommended in certain cases when there is a history to be certain that this elective procedure can be done as safely as possible. Good luck.

every plastic surgeon has his own preoperative protocol which he recommends to his patients so you might need a clearance from a cardiologist. I would suggest you to discuss this with your plastic surgeon.

From your description, it appears that you should be ok with plastic surgery, but your surgeon should decide if you need clearance from a cardiologist. l recommend you to make an appointment with a board certified plastic surgeon to talk about your goals and anything you need to know.

Your surgeon will be the one to advise if you need clearance from a cardiologist as well as your endocrinologist.  As your palpitations are related to your endocrine issues it is likely that will be the only clearance necessary as long as your palpitations are under good control.
