Should I massage textured implants? (Photo)

Thank you for your picture and question. Many surgeons have different opinions about this topic so you are likely to get a wide range of answers. In my practice, I never encourage patients to massage implants. The initial idea was to prevent capsular contracture but I think this is not due to whether or not you massage the implants, but rather due to other factors. I would especially not massage textured implants as the point of the texturing is to get the surrounding tissues to grow to and stick to the implant. In the end you should discuss with your doctor his instructions and follow his advice, but these are just my two cents.Best of luck!

There is no need to massage your textured implants or use Vitamin E.
It sounds like your breasts look great. Enjoy your new look, no need to do anything else.

is not to... as you're wanting the scar tissue that develops around the implant to grow into the texturing to benefit from the texturing.  If it doesn't adhere, now its like a smooth round implant.  So if you're happy with your look, why mess with it and risk your implant not adhering well???  There was a reason you chose textured implants based on what you were presented with and if you want to preserve that as best possible, you shouldn't be massaging your implants.

There are various recommendations on massaging of implants out there. Ultimately, you will need to follow the advice of your doctor. I don't recommend massage of textured implants to my patients as, in my opinion, this can potentially lead to fluid buildup and possibly other issues.

The role of massage in implant surgery is unclear. Vitamin E has not been shown to have an impact on capsular contracture.

 Thank you for the interesting question.  I would agree with what you've read so far - most surgeons would not recommend to massage textured implants.  Your surgeon may have a different idea of what massaging the implant means.  Usually it means pushing the implant around in its pocket while it is in its healing phase.  For a textured implant, however, we want to keep the pocket exactly the same size and shape as the implant.  If the implant is "massaged" and the pocket it stretched out, it may allow enough room for the implant to turn or flip inside the pocket.  This is not an issue for a round implant, but a shaped textured implant will not look right if it flips or turns.  This may not be an issue if you have a textured, round implant and not a shaped implant.  Hopefully that wasn't too confusing.

While you certainly can massage textured breast implants you should probably not do it for the first 6 to 8 weeks.  The purpose of textured implants is to have your body grow into the texture or Velcro to you so that the chance of breast capsule contracture is reduced.  Massage may disrupt this process in the first few weeks.  After that you may but there is no reason that you should have to.  Your implants are different from smooth implants and mo massage in needed.I hope that helps.Best regards.

It is not recommended that you massage textured breast implants.   The purpose of textured breast implants is to form a unique irregular interface with the breast implant capsule which helps prevent capsular contracture.  Massaging the implant could disturb or disrupt this interface and is not advisable.
