Should I get eyelid surgery at 32 years old? (Photo)

Question

I have wanted eyelid surgery for years as I have heavily hooded eyelids. My forehead is developing deep wrinkles as a result of years of holding my eyelids up by raising my eyebrows, especially when talking to people. My eyelids feel very heavy and make me look and feel more tired. However, I was told a couple of years ago by a surgeon that I was too young for eyelid surgery. Could yiu give me some advice please? The upper eyelid ptosis triggers a compensatory eyebrow elevation. By fixing the upper eyelid ptosis, the forehead will relax improving the forehead lines. I also think that in addition to upper eyelid ptosis, you would benefit from an anchor blepharoplasty, which is a highly specific surgical maneuver that makes a hard upper eyelid crease and supports the upper eyelid lashes. I think the likelihood of getting the surgery that you need locally is low.  To get the best possible result, you need to be prepared to travel for this surgery.

Thank you for the question.  It appears you have excess skin (dermatochalasis), as well as mild lid ptosis involving the levator aponeurosis.  See a surgeon who does ptosis surgery, as well as blepharoplasty for a complete evaluation.  Good luck!

Timing of eyelid surgery is not based on age but rather on what problem that patient has and if they would benefit from it. See an oculoplastic surgeon for evaluation.

Hello and thank you for your photo and question. Based on your photo, you look like you would be a good candidate for eyelid surgery. Eyelid surgery is not age specific. It does appear that you have excess eyelid skin in your upper eyelid as well as a possibly weak levator muscle, and an eyelid surgery could help correct this. In fact, you have several options which may remedy your concerns, including an upper eyelid surgery, an augmentation of the levator muscle, a brow lift and even Botox. The latter two options would help open the eye area without having an eyelid surgery. To learn which option or options will give you the results you want, schedule an in-person consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon in your area, have a full examination and discuss the benefits and potential results of each these procedures. It does appear that you have a full upper eyelid and perhaps may benefit from upper eyelid surgery to remove the excess including at some point.  However you may also benefit from a small dosage of Botox to the lateral brow depressor muscle to give a 2 mm Botox browlift that may improve the hooding, with minimal downtime given your age. From your photos yes you have some extra skin but it is not too bad but in the end it is a personal decision and yes you could remove some of your excess skin.

Thanks for the question! The skin of the upper eyelid is the thinnest skin of our entire body. It is the first to show any loss of elasticity so many younger patients request upper eyelid surgery. Many patients have a genetic tendency to have more hooded eyelids, especially if you have deeper set eyes.  Your brow position is important as well, and the fact that you are seeing forehead wrinkles indicates that you are consciously or subconsciously  using your brow elevation to open up your eyelids. Not only does it look better but patients can often see better because it lifts the lateral eyelid skin up off of the eyelid. Removal of the excess upper eyelid skin is the easiest cosmetic surgical procedure that I perform as it is essentially removing a pinch of skin. Sometimes judicious removal of excess fatty tissue is required as well, especially in the nasal end of the upper lid. Address all of your concerns to your surgeon.
