Hello, I am planing on getting a sliding genioplasty next month. The surgeon will be advancing my chin horizontally, vertically, and also making it wider by means of titanium plates and screws fixation method. What I am wondering is how stable is this procedure, especially the first few days after surgery. Do I need to be extra careful not to cause a shift in the bone during the first days? Is laughing, sneezing, etc putting me at risk? And lastly, how stable is this long term? Thanks
Answer: Pretty stable Right after the surgery, the chin segment is pretty stable. Nothing like sneezing or laughing will move anything. It would take a decent punch to the face, or to fall directly on your chin to displace it. However I would not recommend putting any extra pressure on the chin (it would not feel great either.). The bone is fully healed after 6 weeks. The bone will actually be slightly stronger than it was before. It would take even more effort to break it. Overall, this is a stable procedure with minimal probability of displacement.

Similiar to other bone fractures in your body, the chin is healed around 6 weeks postop. The plates and screws usually are staying. They do not have to be removed.
