Being pregnant after a tummy tuck. Could my scar open if I gain too much weight?

I don't think that your scar will be significantly altered by a subsequent Pregnancy after abdominoplasty. I do think that you may experience recurrent skin laxity as well as abdominal wall laxity.

You should be fine with your pregnancy after a tummy tuck. However, you may experience excess skin with laxity together with widening of your abdominal muscle after this. You may consider another tummy tuck if these occur. All the best.

Thank you for your post. You certainly can have a baby after tummy tuck. In a tummy tuck, we are putting your body back together similiar to what you were like before you were pregnant. Your muscle tension, your skin and your fat contours are adjusted. Once you are fully healed from your surgery, your body is just as able to accept a pregnancy as it was before your first pregnancy. However, if your belly area stretched after your first pregnancy, then you are likely to stretch again after your next pregnancy. Most surgeons recommend to have a tummy tuck after you are finished having childern, however, in certain instances, such as starting to date again, or just not being happy with your post pregnancy body, then it makes sense to go ahead and have a tummy tuck. Yes, it is possible to safely carry a baby after having the abdominoplasty procedure.  In general, it is in your best interest, to be as certain as possible that no more pregnancies are in your future prior to having the tummy tuck.  Pregnancy after abdominoplasty may cause changes that will require further surgery to correct. Your scar will not reopen. Generally speaking, the “ideal” patient for tummy tuck surgery is one who has completed pregnancies, is psycho socially/emotionally/financially stable, has an excellent social support system surrounding him/her, is capable of arranging enough recovery time, does not smoke and who has reached a long-term stable weight. Hello and thanks for your question.Your scar will not split open however you will stretch the skin again and have some sagging loose skin after the pregnancy.  You may require to have the surgery again if it is too lax.RegardsStephen Salerno

You should do fine with your pregnancy after your tummy tuck.  The most likely issue will likely be recurrent laxity (looseness) of your skin and possible need for repeat surgery to get your contour back.  If there is any concern make sure you have your OBGYN and your plastic surgeon evaluate you.  Good Luck, Gaurav Bharti

Your abdominal tissues should expand again during pregnancy after tummy tuck.  Your scar will not pop open after 5 years of healing.However post pregnancy the loose skin and muscle split could recur and you may need a revision.
