I was complaining about hardness tightness and muscle pulling sensations and a surgeon said : ' The hardness comes from fibrosis due to the liposuction and the tightness comes from muscle shortening and muscle cramps.' What is fibrosis and what is muscle shortening? Thank you.

this is more common with energy based devices like vaser or laser and will get better with time.  ultrasound, massage, and radiofreqency treatments help improve this more quickly.  Best, Dr. emer.

Swelling and inflammation can cause rigidity of tissues. Fibrosis after conventional liposuction is modest in usually causes no long-term difficulties. Laser assisted liposuction can result in significant fibrosis that may create very long-term problems.

Any form of surgery, including liposuction, will form some scar tissue. Scar tissue is mostly collagen. This collagen will change over time and slowly in a process known as remodeling. This process takes several months. Areas treated with liposuction will typically have lumpiness and firmness for the first six to eight weeks. I am not sure what your surgeon means when he refers to muscle shortening. Liposuction by itself does not cause any changes in muscles. Most of us have had some muscle cramps at some point in our lives, like charley horses. Cramping muscles are typically identified by the patient. Soreness after liposuction is due to inflammation and short-term tissue damage, which is a normal side effect of surgery.
