I had a tummy tuck in the summer of 2019. At the time I was 5'10 and 220 pounds. I looked and felt great. However, exactly one year post-op, my back started hurting. The pain is in my left lower back somtimes hip area. It even shoots down my leg. My life has been ruined due to this pain. I have not been able to work out and can hardly walk. Is there any chance my tummy tuck caused this pain? If so, is there anything I can do to get relief? I have seen back doctors and PTs with no luck.
Answer: Nerve pain Right after Tummy tuck it is required the bending over position and sometimes it may cause back muscle spasm because overstretching but, it totally improves after patients acquire the upright position. Your pain sounds more like a typical sciatic nerve pinching and you need a Spine surgeon or specialist: orthopedist or Neurosurgeon. Muscle tightening during tummy tucks improves back pain. Be encouraged!! Dr. Cárdenas

Answer: Evaluating the Link Between Tummy Tuck and Back Pain Thank you for your question regarding whether your previous tummy tuck may be the cause of your back pain. It is highly unlikely that your tummy tuck has caused your back pain. In fact, tummy tucks are often performed to alleviate back pain, not induce it. To address your back pain, it's crucial to undergo a thorough evaluation. This may involve getting an MRI and consulting with an orthopedic or spine surgeon. Treatments like steroid or PRP shots may be recommended depending on the findings. However, I do not believe your back pain is a result of your tummy tuck. It is essential to explore other potential causes and seek appropriate medical evaluation to determine the source of your discomfort. I hope this response provides some clarity on whether your tummy tuck is related to your back pain. Best of luck in finding the proper diagnosis and treatment for your condition. Sincerely, Dr. Katzen

Answer: Surgery No, with shooting pain down your leg from your hip, you may have sciatica and may have a bulging disc. An MRI would be helpful. If you are overweight, loose the weight and you may get a lot of relief.

Answer: Back pain During the first couple of weeks after surgery some patients have discomfort in the lower back from the muscles of the abdomen being tight, but this subsides quickly. Back pain from a tummy tuck would not begin a year after surgery. I encourage you to meet with your primary care physician to discuss your concerns.

Answer: Could my previous tummy tuck be the cause of my back pain? 4 years Hello @n2jesus87, thank you for your question. it's unusual for a tummy tuck to be the direct source of back pain, especially this long after the surgery. Most typically, any back discomfort associated with a tummy tuck would arise shortly after the procedure and be related to altered posture due to the healing process. you might consider consulting a neurologist or an orthopedic specialist who can provide a thorough evaluation and explore other potential causes of your pain. Keep in mind that correlation doesn't imply causation. Best wishes! Alan Gonzalez MD, FACS.
